We have an NSF award to develop and implement FTICR MS for studying macromolecular assemblies. Our strategy is to explore the ability of FTICR to compete with QToF instrumentation in the area largely pioneered by Carol Robinson. I am still looking for a postdoc to work in this area.

The postdoctoral student will assist with the modification of a 7 Tesla-based instrument and with implementation of electrical compensation of ICR traps, to apply various methods of activation (ECD, SORI, and high-energy CA) with FTICR, to increase the sensitivity by using off-trap ion storage, to use a new Bruker 12-T instrument to augment the studies on the 7-T, and to study protein assemblies.

The prospects in the area and the goal we seek to accomplish are illustrated by a recent communication in JASMS. The person can also gain some experience in a related biophysics area, as illustrated by the 2nd attachment.

I want to appoint someone with expertise in instrumentation, especially in FTICR or other related areas in MS. The position is open immediately and will be for two years. The person will work in a group rich in other mass spectrometers including orbitrap, LTQ-FTICR, two QTOFs including the new Bruker MaXis, Bruker 12 Tesla FTICR SolariX, a MALDI TOF/TOF, and some ion traps, most equipped with HPLC or UPLC. A nanomate robot is also available for the research. Considerable complementary research in analytical and structural proteomics is ongoing and serves to complement this new program
