spectrometry adopting thermal vaporization is routinely utilized in the mass
analysis of a volatile molecule. However, since the non-volatile compounds such
as biological molecule are thermally decomposed or degraded, their parent ions
remain veiled, resulting in inaccuracy on molecular structure. In order to
vaporize intactly the thermally fragile non-volatile molecule and photoionize
them in gas phase, we have developed the IR laser desorption and VUV
photoionization mass spectrometer utilizing carbon powder as the role of matrix
in the MALDI and the VUV laser for one-photon ionization. Therein, the
non-volatile molecule mixed with carbon powder on graphite surface is desorbed
by IR laser pulse, followed by supersonic expansion with Ar carrier gas into
the photoionization chamber. Then, the desorbed molecule introduced into the
photoionization chamber is photoionized by the VUV laser pulse. We applied the
developed mass spectrometer to measure the mass spectra of several non-volatile
organic molecules and particularly the photoionization efficiency curves of
[glycine-H] channel.
