Melatonin (MLT) is a secreted endogenous hormone from the pineal gland of the brain that plays an important role in regulating sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythm. Nuts are crucial components of a healthy and balanced diet and also a natural melatonin source for supplementing decreased melatonin. Commonly, the extraction of melatonin in nuts was performed by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) or solid phase extraction (SPE) method. However, the LLE or SPE method was inefficient because it takes time to sample drying or reqiures a complex preparation process. In this study, we extracted melatonin in nuts using a simple and rapid QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) procedure and analyzed by ultra performance liquid chromatography -tandem mass spectrometry with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) scan mode. |
