Cyclic volatile methylsiloxanes (cVMS) are volatile organic compounds(VOCs) consisting of Si-O structural units, which are arranged in a ring with two methyl groups attached to each silicon atom. They have high volatility, low surface tension, high thermal stability and smooth texture. Due to these properties, cVMS, especially octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane(D4), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane(D5) and dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane (D6) are widely used in personal care products(PCPs) as an additive to improve the spreadability and texture. However, cVMS have been reported as highly persistent and bioaccumulative which may have adverse effects on the human health and the environment in the long term. Therefore, it is important to determine the concentration of cVMS in PCPs, which are also reported as the major source of cVMS in indoor air. Although several studies have been conducted on the measuring cVMS of PCPs manufactured in many countries, studies on cVMS of PCPs most people using in Korea are scarce. In this study, D4, D5 and D6 were extracted from PCPs mostly used in Korea and their concentrations were measured using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). PCPs were grouped into hair care products, body care products, facial products and other products based on the body parts applied. Sixty products were selected according to the sales rankings of supermarket and Health & Beauty store’s E-commerce site in Korea and measured.
